On a three-acre site within the Promontory business park, Phil Pokorny has designed a new 26,000 s.f. home for Excelsior Software. This company develops award-winning products that help parents keep better track of student grades and progress. Excelsior has been averaging 30 percent annual growth in recent years and needed more room and a building reflecting their international status in their field.

The horizontal nature of the Northern Colorado open range was inspirational in the design of the building. The material palette is a combination of historical influences interpreted for a building ":of our time". Regional agricultural heritage is seen in the corrugated metal cladding. The rugged stone base with deep set openings is reminiscent of an historic western outpost, and the glazing patterns and horizontal louver screens recall long ribbons of ranch fencing. The combination is organized to create a distinctly modernist statement about the high-tech company it houses, but with an underlying current of regional appropriateness.
