Hiawatha of 1939

[ Original 40" x 20.25" - Multi-Media on Board ]

One of the most legendary trains of the streamline era, the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha was named after the "fleet of foot " character in Longfellow's poem. Styled by industrial designer Otto Kuhler, the handsome locomotive and train of 1939 was the fastest ever to be powered by steam, capable of speeds of more than 120 mph. On the extraordinary "beaver tail" observation car at the end of the train, Kuhler used bold fins, sweeping stripes, and expansive areas of glass to provide an appropriate finale.
